Cause of heart disease spurred by kidney syndrome found, neutralized

Chronic kidney disease sufferers are more likely to die of heart disease than kidney problems. However, it hasn’t been clear how kidney disease causes heart disease or what could be done to stop it. But a new study at the School of Medicine led by Keith A. Hruska, MD, may offer a new approach to tackling health problems brought on by kidney disease.

Open for business

Students got their first look inside the new Knight and Bauer halls last week as the Olin Business School buildings opened for classes. The $90 million, 175,000-square-foot project features office space for faculty and programs, classrooms and large gathering spaces. A formal dedication will be held May 2.

Some patients may benefit from hip resurfacing over replacement

A study led by researchers at the School of Medicine suggests a procedure called hip resurfacing may be a better option than total hip replacement for some patients, particularly those who are young and active.

Thurtene Spirit Week events raise money for charity

Doughnuts, a barbecue block party and benefit dinners are all part of Thurtene Spirit Week, which runs through Sunday, March 30, and will raise awareness and funds for this year’s charity, TASK (Team Activities for Special Kids). The week concludes with a three-on-three basketball tournament.
